Physical Education and Adapted Physical Education Research

My name is Dr. Craig Coffey, a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Sport & Early Childhood at TUS Limerick. I am currently inviting educators across Early Years, Primary, and Secondary education to participate in a short questionnaire exploring experiences and perspectives on Physical Education (PE) and Adapted Physical Education (APE).

The aim of this research is to better understand how student participation and inclusion in PE can be improved, ensuring that all learners, regardless of ability, feel engaged and supported. In addition, the study seeks to identify how educators can be better supported in delivering adapted physical education.

Your insights, and those of your members, would be invaluable in helping to shape future strategies to enhance inclusivity and accessibility in PE programmes. The questionnaire will take approximately 10–20 minutes to complete, and all responses will remain confidential. I would greatly appreciate it if you could share this with relevant individuals.

This study also aims to examine the current landscape of adapted physical education and physical activity among children and adolescents in Ireland. Specifically, it will explore:

  • How time is allocated for PE within the school week.
  • Whether educators feel adequately equipped (in terms of knowledge, resources, space, and time) to deliver PE.
  • Educators’ knowledge and experience in adapting PE lessons.
  • Whether there is a need for specialist PE provision to support all students.

If you are interested in contributing to this important study, please follow the link below to complete the questionnaire or scan the QR code attached:

Thank you for your time and support.
Kind regards,
Craig Coffey
