Brendan O’Keeffe

President

Brendan is a lecturer in Health & Physical Education at the University of Limerick. He has been a member of the PEAI executive since 2016. He is a graduate of the BSc in PE programme at UL and taught PE in Glenstal Abbey School Limerick, before returning to UL to complete a Doctorate in monitoring health-related fitness among adolescents.

He is co-director of the PEPAYS Ireland Research Centre and his research interests span across a broad range of health and fitness-related themes among youth, including physical education teacher education, scalable school-based health interventions and resistance exercise among youth. He has served on the PEAI Executive since 2016.

Alan Finnegan

Vice-President

Alan is a Physical Education and Gaeilge teacher in Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh, Limerick City, where he has taught since graduating from the BSc. Physical Education programme in UL in 2017. In 2022 he was awarded a Master of Science by research from UL, after investigating the promotion of a physically active school culture in an Irish post-primary school.

Alan has been a member of the PEAI since 2014, attending the conference that year back in the school where he had his own secondary school education, Ardscoil Rís. Since then he has served as the PEAI student rep for UL, presented several workshops at PEAI Conferences, and has been a member of the PEAI Executive since 2022. Alan is the editor of the PEAI bi-annual newsletters, and is the PEAI representative on the NCCA’s Leaving Certificate PE subject development group.

Simon Cullen

Treasurer

Simon is a Physical Education Teacher at Boyne Community School in Trim, Co. Meath. He has 16 years of teaching experience in a variety of educational settings in Ireland, England and Italy. He graduated from St. Mary’s University College Strawberry Hill, in London in 2004 with a BSc in Physical Education Initial Teacher Training with Qualified Teacher Status.

He was a Phase One LCPE Teacher from when the subject was first introduced in Ireland. Simon has also been a PDST Associate / OIDE Associate Learning Leader for the last 5 years. Simon sat on the Junior Cycle Physical Education Development Group for the NCCA. He has been a member of the PEAI Executive for 4 years including holding the role previously as Assistant Treasurer, whilst coordinating the Treasurer role for the last two years.

John Murphy

Assistant Treasurer

Physical Education & Geography – University of Limerick. 10 years teaching PE at St Mary’s New Ross, Co Wexford and Colaiste Abhainn Ri, Callan, Co Kilkenny.

5 years LCPE Teacher and PDST PE Associate. Current Lecturer in Sports Pedagogy, S&C and Research Methods at SETU Waterford.

SEN registered Sport Nutritionist. PhD in Physical Activity & Wellbeing. Award 2 Hurling Coach with experience from Nursery to Senior Inter-County. Runner with Kilkenny City Harriers.

Aoife O’Mahony

Executive Committee Member & IUKPLF Representative

Aoife is in her 2nd Year as a qualified teacher in Gaelcholáiste Charraig Uí Leighin, Cork teaching Physical Education and Irish. She graduated from the B.Ed Sport Studies and Physical Education course at UCC and also received the prestigious ‘Above & Beyond award’ as a result of her contributions over the years in 2022, the year she graduated.

As she currently has experience teaching both 5th and 6th year LCPE classes, she is up to date with the most recent curricular developments. She has qualifications such as Personal Training, lifeguarding and swim teaching completed which align with her overall passion for health and fitness. She is also passionate about Irish and is currently doing a Level 9 Diploma in Irish translation alongside teaching. Finally, she overlooks the PEAI Instagram and is a representative of the IUKPLF.

Garrett Coyle

Executive Committee Member & EUPEA Board Representative

Garrett has been teaching Physical Education at St. Macartan’s College since 2001. He has been on the Executive Committee of the PEAI since 2013 and was President of the Association from 2019-2022.

Garrett was elected onto the European Physical Education Association (EUPEA) in November 2020. Garrett has been a Physical Education Associate for PDST & JCT and is currently a Physical Education  Associate for OIDE. He is also a CPR4Schools Tutor. Garrett sat on the Junior Cycle Physical Education Development Group for the NCCA and is currently involved in the JCPE Network with the NCCA. Garrett is also heavily involved in the GAA and is currently the Chairperson of Ulster Coaching & Games.

Katie McAuliffe

Executive Member

Katie is currently lecturing at Munster Technological University Kerry on the third and fourth-year undergraduate programme in Physical Education and Business while also delivering modules on the Higher Diploma in Physical Education in MTU. After graduating from I.T Tralee with a BSc. in Health and Leisure with Physical Education in 2015 she continued her studies in the University of Limerick to obtain a Professional Masters of Education with Physical Education.

Following this she traveled to the United Arab Emirates to take up a position of PE teaching where she remained for five years. On return to Ireland, she is now an external school placement tutor for the University of Limerick. Katie has previously been an examiner for  LCPE through the SEC.

Peter Keaney

Executive Member

Peter is currently a teacher of Physical Education, Math and Biology at Our Lady of Mercy College Beaumont, Dublin 9. Graduating from DCU’s BSc. Physical Education with Biology in 2013, he entered into his 10th year of teaching.

He was in Phase 1 of the LCPE rollout in 2018/19 and is currently working as a part-time associate in Oíde facilitating Professional Learning Experiences for teachers on Phases 4 & 5 of LCPE. Peter is currently completing the Professional Doctorate in Elite Performance at DCU with a focus on the implementation of School Placements within the current educational landscape.

Gráinne Phelan

Executive Member

Gráinne is a Physical Education and Gaeilge teacher from Limerick City. She is currently teaching PE, LCPE and Gaeilge in Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher, Co. Limerick. Gráinne graduated from the University of Limerick in 2013 and then completed an Erasmus Mundus Masters in Adapted Physical Activity from Leuven, Belgium. Gráinne has been an examiner for the PAP, PA and Written Papers for the SEC.

She has a keen interest in all things water and recently qualified as an International Trainee Technical Classifier with World Para Swimming.
