1. IntroductionThe Physical Education Association of Ireland (PEAI) was founded in 1968 and currently has a membership of approximately 350. The objectives of the association are as follows:
In pursuit of these objectives the PEAI is committed to working in partnership with Government Departments; the Irish Sports Council; third level colleges; school management bodies; parents groups; National Governing Bodies and other agencies. Physical activity, whether recreational or competitive, provides significant health, social and economic benefits to our country. Physical Education provides the bedrock on which safe and sustainable physical activity patterns are established. At a time when the Irish Government is showing increased commitment to investment in sport and physical activity, it is essential that children of school-going age are provided with comprehensive Physical Education experiences. This document outlines a draft strategy statement for the future of Physical Education. It also outlines the future role of the PEAI. The fundamental case is made that Physical Education is an essential part of the education of the school age populations. Physical Education should also continue right throughout life. A pro-active professional association is central to achieving these objectives. This strategy proposes a strong partnership between the PEAI and other agencies in achieving the vision of meaningful Physical Education as an integral part of Irish life. The draft document has been developed by a working group, which was established by the Executive Committee of the P.E.A.I. The group has worked since December 1999 to produce a draft for discussion by the membership of the Association and other interested parties. A consultative process occurred and a draft strategic plan was accepted in principle at the 2000 AGM. It was agreed at this meeting that the strategic be revised in line with feedback from further consultation. The current revised draft will be presented for approval at the 2001 AGM. |
