PEAI Strategic Initiatives 2008/2009

The executive will be focussing their energies on three particular areas which have been highlighted by teachers as necessary and urgent. If a practicing teacher wishes to contribute to these initiatives in any way, please contact the necessary person outlined below

Physical Education teaching case studies

To produce and disseminate at the PEAI 2009 Conference a case study resource that will report, through physical education teachers’ narratives, the reality of teaching physical education in Irish post-primary schools. The three PEAI 2008 Conference themes of teaching senior cycle physical education, physical education subject inspections and planning and assessment in physical education will inform the case studies. The case studies will encourage the sharing of experiences between qualified teachers and pre-service physical education teachers.

The following fact sheets have been compiled by the PEAI Executive and can be used to provide information on PE to parents, boards of management, other teachers, and students.

Senior Cycle and Leaving Certificate Physical Education

Following from numerous requests from our members at the PEAI Conference (DCU, Oct 2008), the executive, in conjunction with the NCCA, will undertake to provide teachers with information, and seek feedback on the proposed developments at Leaving Certificate Physical Education and Senior Cycle Physical Education. This will be in the form of regional information workshops in early 2009. The feedback garnered from practicing teacher will then be presented by the PEAI representative at NCCA meetings on the new curricula.

Responding to the DES directive regarding the withdrawal of paid substitution cover for school business

The recent budget may have implications for the provision of both physical education and extra-curricular activities in schools. A PEAI sub-committee has been established to formulate a response to this development. The PEAI will also be supporting the national demonstrations against the budget cuts.  The demonstration will take place at 12.00 noon on Saturday the 6th of December, assembling at Parnell square and marching towards government buildings in Marrion square.  We hope that you can join us in support of this protest.
