Leaving Certificate Syllabus Consultation – September 2011

Letter to schools with dates and times of meetings available here...

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) are currently at an advanced stage in the development of two documents at senior cycle in area of physical education namely…

  • Senior Cycle Physical Education (SCPE) Framework – non-examinable
  • Leaving Certificate Physical Education (LCPE) Syllabus - examinable

The PEAI provided the conduit by which teachers could provide feedback on the SCPE Framework last May. This occurred by means of regional meetings and was hugely successful, both by means of numbers of teachers who contributed and the quality of the feedback. A brief summary of the findings of this consultation is available at www.peai.org

As promised last May, it is now the turn of the LCPE Syllabus. The syllabus has been refined and redrafted over a period of almost two years through a process of deliberation of course committee and Board of Studies level, and is now being put forward by the NCCA for broader consultation by the profession. Similarly to last May’s consultation, the NCCA have requested that the PEAI host a number of regional meetings and provide a means through which practicing teachers can contribute to the process. Details of the meeting dates and times are available overleaf.

What:The NCCA is currently engaging in a process of consultation regarding the new Leaving Certificate Physical Education Syllabus. The PEAI is supporting the consultation process.
Why:To inform teachers of the proposed new syllabus design and the elements contained within and to give teachers an opportunity to voice opinion on the new syllabus to create the best document possible.
Who:This is open to all qualified teachers of Physical Education.
How:A presentation will be made which will provide an overview of the syllabus document. This will be followed by a formal opportunity to discuss and respond. Feedback from these meetings will be relayed to the NCCA to inform their consultation.

Details of the consultation meetings are available overleaf and on www.peai.org  Again, this is a unique opportunity for you to respond to and further inform the experience of students in Senior Cycle Physical Education into the future, where it is proposed to become an examinable subject for the first time.I suggest that you download the syllabus document on the NCCA Website prior to the meeting as having pre-read the document will enable an informed discussion and considered feedback at the meeting.

Please contact your local education centre (numbers above) or click here to express your interest in attending your selected workshop. Please note that a meeting may be cancelled if insufficient numbers of teachers express interest in a specific area. We the PEAI would greatly welcome your attendance and value your contribution and I look forward to seeing you at your most convenient meeting.
