The PEAI have launched an award in recognition of an outstanding contribution to physical education in Ireland. It will be presented annually at the PEAI Conference. The award is named in memory of Michael Darmody.

'Michael Darmody worked as a physical education inspector with the Department of Education for many years. His tenure of office was marked by great strides in the development of curricula and of the physical and human infra-structure of physical education in Ireland. In his role as inspector he acted as friend, guide, mentor and instigator. He was the capacity builder before the term became popular. He imagined a new future for physical education in Ireland and worked strategically and tirelessly towards its attainment. He propounded the “art of the possible”. Who can nominate?

Any current members of the PEAI can proposed and second a nominee for the Michael Darmody Award.

How do I nominate someone?

Any nominee must be a qualified physical education teacher

Any nominee must have made a contribution to physical education in Ireland, over a number of years, in one or more of the following areas

• Contribution to teacher education or continued professional development       
• Exhibition of exemplary practice
• Exploration of new possibilities for physical education
• Development of policy
• Provision of direction or vision to the development of the subject
• Advocacy for or stimulation of interest in physical education

Where and when must I submit my nomination?

Nominations may be sent to executive committee member Con Moynihan at conchurog@eircom.net or Marie Clonan at marieclonan@gmail.com

Closing date for nominations is 25th September.

What happens then?

A selection committee will be chosen annually by the PEAI executive committee

The selection committee view all nominations and select a recipient based on the criteria

When is the award made?

The award is made annually at the PEAI Conference

The Michael Darmody Award recipient also receives honorary membership of the PEAI.
